Abstract:
This is an ArcGIS geodatabase version of the corresponding ISGS geologic map, Mines in the Illinois Portion of the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District by F. Brett Denny (ISGS), W. John Nelson (ISGS), Jeremy R. Breeden (ISGS), and Ross C. Lillie (North Star Minerals). The spatial reference is geographic coordinates (longitude, latitude), decimal degrees, NAD83, known in ArcGIS as GCS_North_American_1983. The nominal scale is 1:50,000. The Fluorspar Mine Map project produced a map of the Illinois portion of the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District (IKFD) at a 1:50,000 scale. An ISGS Circular was published detailing approximately 180 fluorspar mines and prospects within the Illinois portion of the IKFD, and is included in the seventy-page report that accompanies the map. The report includes mine history, mining methods, production figures, mineralogy of deposits, ore grades, regional tectonics, regional stratigraphy, and ore models.
Purpose:
This data compilation is intended to provide an overview of the geology of the map area. The data do not replace the need for detailed site-specific studies. The information is not appropriate for, and is not to be used as, a geodetic, legal, or engineering base. The information has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. This map provides a general view of fluorspar mines in southern Illinois. It does not replace the need for detailed investigations of specific sites. This geologic map was funded in part by the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resources Program under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI, award number G19AC00256, 2019). The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the U.S. Government.

This geodatabase, conforms to the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standard outlined in, GeMS (Geologic Map Schema)— A Standard Format for the Digital Publication of Geologic Maps, USGS Techniques and Methods 11-B10. Documentation for GeMS is available at
https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. Metadata for each data element in the geodatabase is included and details the description, purpose, and entity and attribute information. Two shapefile versions of the dataset are also available in the folders ending in 'open' and 'simple' that accompany the geodatabase. The open version is a complete translation of the features in the geodatabase into shapefiles and comma-delimited text files. The simple version is a translation of most features in the geodatabase into relatively easy-to-use shapefiles.
